Simya yaptıklarında ve annesini geri getirirken alphonse yok olurken edward'ın kolu ve bacağı yok olur. Alphonseyi simya bilgisi ile ruhunu bir metal zırha koyar kan mührü yapar. ve Alphonsenin bedenini geri getirmek için Felsefe taşını ararlar çünkü simyada bir şeyi elde etmek için eşit takas yöntemi vardır. bir arabayı tamir etmek için aynı kütlede parçaların olması gerek fakat felsefe taşını kullanırlarda eşit takas yönteminden muaf olacaktırlar. Felsefe taşını aramak için orduya katılırlar ve roy mustang ile tanışırlar.
